CHROMEBOOK RETURN

Starting Tuesday, January 18, 2022 we will be using Chromebooks in school again. Please send your child to school with his/her Chromebook and charger on January 18, 2022. Please charge the Chromebook before returning to school.

If for any reason your child needs to participate in remote learning again, the Chromebook and charger will be sent home.

Kindergarten

What a week----busy, busy, busy! Little environmentalists explored the needs of plants; mathematicians worked hard completing their chapter 5 assessment and starting our next chapter, subtraction! Writers began a new unit in which they will be writing true stories from our lives! Super readers flexed their reading muscles by changing the tone of their voice while reading to prove they understand what they are reading.

This week we also took some time to talk about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essential vocabulary that comes to mind when discussing the life and legacy of this fearless leader includes compassion, equality, freedom, determination, peace and naturally----LOVE!

Please remember to practice putting on and taking off jackets with your child, as well as zipping them. Many students still need help doing this. Stay warm and have a great 3 day weekend! There is no school on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

First Grade

First graders have been working extra hard during these half days. In Fundations, the students continued to learn glued sounds. This week they learned “ang”, “ing”, “ong”, and “ung”. In reading, students are learning various different strategies for reading Nonfiction books. They have been practicing taking sneak peeks, looking closely at each page, thinking about the information presented in the pictures and words, and rereading to check for understanding. Students are enjoying learning fun facts about their topics! In math, students finished Chapter 3 and demonstrated their ability to use various strategies to add. Students also began learning how to use similar strategies to compute subtraction problems. We are so proud of their perseverance through the recent changes in the schedule.

Second Grade

Our second graders have been busy this week learning many new skills in all subject areas. In reading workshop the students learned how we can read nonfiction books across topics and become experts who can teach others. In writing workshop this week the students learned to write nonfiction books of ALL kinds, how to lean on mentor authors for support and how to transfer skills we already learned as writers into our new books! In math the students learned to combine an open syllable with closed and vowel consonant-e syllables in words. In math the students used compensation to develop flexible thinking for 2-digit addition; apply place-value concepts when using a break-apart strategy with 2-digit addition, model 2-digit addition with regrouping; draw quick pictures and use the standard algorithm for 2-digit addition with regrouping.

This week in science the students continued to learn about what plants need to grow, parts of a plant and how each part helps the plant survive. Thank you for your continued support.

BIRTHDAY/HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS

School Street School will begin to allow birthday and holiday celebrations again. In the interest of everyone's safety we have put the following precautions into place:

We strongly recommend that students bring in non-food related items for their celebrations. Stickers, pencils, craft materials, etc. are preferred. However, if a student does want to bring in a food-based treat, they are permitted to do so if it is noted on the approved food list and also approved by the classroom teacher. If a student is to bring in a food item to share, prior notification must be provided so that the teacher and Ms. Chauhan can verify that the item is on the approved food list. Below is the link to our approved snacks.

A Few Important Reminders from Mrs. Chauhan

*Getting your flu shot may be more important than ever this year.

This year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it may be more important than ever to get the influenza vaccine. The flu vaccine will not protect you against COVID-19, but it will reduce your risk of getting the flu.

A Flu virus can cause many of the same symptoms as COVID-19, including fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s even more important to be vaccinated against the flu to help prevent influenza, avoid a mistaken diagnosis of COVID-19, and preserve healthcare resources. The flu vaccine is recommended for all elementary students, but for children up to 59 months old (all Pre-k students), it is required by state statute, and compliance is mandated for a student to remain in school. Non-compliance with this mandate will necessitate the student to be excluded from school until compliance is met.

Please forward your physician's immunization record or exemption letter to the email provided as soon as possible to stay in compliance with the state mandate.
