What's Happening at School Street School?

Kindergarten

This week was all about 100! We counted by tens, fives and ones all the way to one hundred. We enjoyed Margery Cuyler's 100th Day Worries about a girl who fretted over what she should bring to school on the 100th day. She eventually realizes that 100 bits of LOVE is the best collection of all!

Our kindergartners did a great job offering clues regarding their collections and trying to "stump" their friends! Some of the collections included: pennies, Legos, buttons, corn kernels, seeds, and even 100 puzzle pieces! Other themes this week included President's Day and of course, Valentine's Day. We surprised Mrs. Schessler with a "Love Bug" valentine card that each of us signed! What a "sweet" week at SSS!

100 Hundred Days Smarter!

First Grade

What a busy short week! Students have been excited to get ready for the 100th day of School and Valentine’s Day this week. Some classes have been working on special activities and projects to commemorate these special occasions. Our readers continue to work on becoming experts in reading nonfiction books. Students are taking note of keywords and interesting facts to share with their reading partners. Our writers are completing their Teaching Books. They are learning to revise their writing and add more details to teach their readers more about their topics . Our mathematicians are finishing up place value and comparing numbers to use these skills to add two digit numbers to find sums.

This is the fourth week of Running Start! Our first graders have read a grand total of 1,730 books in just 3 weeks!! They should be extremely proud. Please continue to read daily. There are more challenges to meet in the last 7 weeks of Running Start. Remember that there is no school on Friday and Monday. Students can bring in 10 paper sneakers on Tuesday! Enjoy the long weekend and Happy Reading!

Second Grade

Happy Valentine’s Day! The second graders were busy delivering all their Valentines this week showing classmates their kindness and caring qualities. Our second grade readers are continuing to grow their reading skills by understanding figurative language, working on comprehension and making our reading more fluent. In writing, we are learning how to include craft moves to our personal narrative pieces to add details by studying mentor texts. Regrouping three digit addition and subtraction has been our main focus in math. We will soon move onto counting money and telling time. Please have your child practice by counting your change. Have a wonderful President’s Day weekend.

Music

Kindergarten students sing solos while classmates practice their audience etiquette skills with the Beat Buddies.

First Graders are becoming more independent and creative with their music making! Click here to see them creating and preparing for their showcase on April 3, Commotion in the Ocean!

Second graders show their decoding skills as they wrap up Unit One in their music literacy unit.
