What's Happening at School Street School?

Dear Families,

Our teachers and paraprofessionals continue to work hard each day to ensure our students grow as thinkers and problem solvers. I have enjoyed visiting Google Meets and hearing the great discussions that take place. KUDOS to ALL!

Monday is a professional development day for our teachers. Classes will end at noon.

We are currently working with Lifetouch to plan a virtual picture day. As soon as we have more information, we will pass it along. We also plan to have in person photos taken this spring!

Be well,

Alison Schessler

This week "Super Readers" learned even more super powers!

We learned that partners not only help us in life, they help us during reading too!

Partner reading is an important component of Reader's Workshop----one that will be activated and practiced in first grade as well! "Picture Power" is a useful tool that enables readers to check pictures and illustrations to decipher unknown text and increase comprehension. This week we also learned how to turn more words into words we know "in a snap!"

Parents and caregivers, please note that your kindergartner's Reader's Workshop assignments on Seesaw now include short, informative videos---like the ones that are posted for writing. Students should watch the videos and scroll through all the slides to ensure optimum understanding.

If you haven't yet viewed this brief informative introduction to our Super Powers unit PLEASE do so by clicking on the link below:

Thank you once again for partnering with us! Happy Reading!

First Grade News

We returned from our November break and jumped right back into our important first grade work this week. We have finished up Chapter 4 in math and now we know so many strategies to help us add and subtract. We also began a brand new unit in Fundations. We are learning about the suffix -s. Did you know that suffix -s makes two sounds? Go ahead and ask us, we’d love to share with you the two sounds it makes. Our Word Detectives are applying all their training to read a shared story this week before we officially “graduate” from Word Detective Training. We have been so busy writing How-To books lately. This week we worked on making sure our stories are not missing any steps, by acting out our stories to help us come up with the exact words we need to use. We also worked on adding WARNINGS to our How-To stories! We also put our lab coats back on this week so that we could begin to discover more about light energy and discover how different forms of light can help us in the dark. As you can see, it has been a very busy week in first grade but not too busy to stop and enjoy some good books. We hope everyone will find the time to sit down with a good book in the busy weeks ahead.

Second Grade News

This week the second grade students began their unit on 2-digit addition. We know how important this skill is in everyday life and we will make sure to practice it for full mastery. In reading we are learning to make movies in our mind by picturing what is happening with the words in our stories. We are also using new strategies to figure out tricky words. In writing we are practicing how to hook a reader with interesting leads of their chapters. In Social Studies we will be traveling all over the world to learn how different cultures celebrate their holidays.
