KINDERGARTEN NEWS!

Writers celebrate completing their How-To Writing Unit:

How to Draw a Shark

by Luke

How to Get Ready for School

by Parina

This week little environmentalists learned more about the sun and how it provides light, heat and food. During social studies, we discussed our favorite neighborhood eateries, along with our favorite places to gather and play. During math, we continued sorting shapes and paid extra attention to squares and triangles. Did you know-----a dodecagon is a flat shape with 12 sides?!

Writers fine tuned their how-to books and even added dedication pages. In order to do so, we thought about who might benefit from and enjoy our books. How-to topics celebrated this week included: How to Catch the Easter Bunny, How to Get Ready for Bed, How to Plant Flowers, How to Count to 100 and How To Celebrate Ramadan! The children did an impressive job with this not-so-easy genre!

Next up for Writer's Workshop is an exciting new unit---Persuasive Writing. Please take a moment to view this informative video about persuasive writing. It will help you better support your writer as they embark on this new endeavor!

Thanks again for your continued support. Happy weekend!

If you or someone you know living in Boonton has a child who will be 5 on or before October 1st, please visit our website to register him/her for KINDERGARTEN.

FIRST GRADE NEWS!

Our realistic fiction writers are taking their readers on imaginative adventures by bringing their characters to life. They are using dialogue and body movements to give their characters personality. In Fundations, our spelling whizzes are building words with vowel-consonant-e syllables. The first graders can distinguish the difference between closed and vowel-consonant-e syllables and build these words with a suffix. Our mathematicians have completed Chapter 10: Represent Data. They have read and created picture graphs, bar graphs, and tally charts. They have learned to use the data from the graphs to problem solve. The students had a blast asking their classmates questions and collecting data from their votes. In Science, they have explored which body parts help animals find and eat food. They have investigated how people observe animal adaptations to solve everyday problems. Please remember starting next week, April 19th, in-person learning students will be coming in five days a week. Students have reviewed the guidelines for safe social distance learning in the classroom. It is important to practice these guidelines more than ever with larger class sizes. The first graders are doing a terrific job following all safety protocols!

SECOND GRADE NEWS!

Once upon a time in a not so distant classroom were many great second grade writers. This week in second grade, the students began their fairy tale writing unit. We are discovering mystical worlds, quaint cottages, magnificent castles as well as characters that show bravery against unforeseen circumstances. We are also reading fairy tale classics to understand how the pattern and elements of a fairy tale work. In math we are finishing up our units of measurement. In science we are continuing to learn about the many different types of extreme weather and what the causes of them are. The children are excited to get the chance to be together with friends, while still following the safety guidelines and practices as we start next week with combing cohorts. Thank you to all our parents who continue to support and work with us during this new transition.
