KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten writers brainstormed all of the things that they know how to do. Writers wrote a cover page for all of their how-to topics. We also learned from mentor texts such as, My First Soccer Game, How to Make Lemonade, and Everyone Can Learn to Ride a Bicycle. This week readers discussed how we can act out stories in our minds when reading. Just like when you watch a movie! Students also went on reading playdates where some students played school, games, or pretend. It was so much fun! Mathematicians practiced counting to 100 by tens this week. We completed the week by showing off our skills taking a chapter test. Ask your child to show you how they can count to 100 by tens!

KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS LEARNING NEW STRATEGIES @ CONQUER MATH

FIRST GRADE

The first graders have been preparing for their new reading unit, “Readers Have Big Jobs to Do”. As a class, they have been reading Frog and Toad Are Friends to practice strategies such as making predictions, drawing conclusions, drawing inferences, and retelling the story. They are excited to begin their new reading unit next week. In Fundations, the students reviewed closed syllables and have learned to sound out and build words with five sounds. They are becoming super spellers! In Math, our mathematicians continued to practice using tens and ones. They have learned to read, write, and model numbers up to 120 and show how to make numbers different ways. In Writing, students have completed their nonfiction chapter books and have shared their pieces with the class. They are excited to see their favorite pieces hanging on the Wall of Pride in our building.

SECOND GRADE

Our second grade students worked hard again this week learning many new skills. This week the students learned to identify some types of traditional literature including fairy tales, folk tales, and tall tales. They also learned that characters in fairy tales experience a range of emotions throughout the stories and live in significantly different worlds than we do. In writing the students learned about the elements of a fairy tale to prepare for writing their own fractured fairy tales. In fundations the students learned how to read, write and mark up words with oi and oy along with practicing those trick words. In math the students worked in chapter 6 learning how to regroup three digit numbers in addition and subtraction. We also worked on problem solving with some multiple step problems. In social studies the students continued to focus on women’s history month learning about famous women who achieved their goals. Don’t forget to attend your parent/teacher conference on Monday, April 4th if you signed up with your student’s teacher.
