**Animal Refuge League: Westbrook: only activity; 10:00 - 1:00

• Students will participate in the following three lessons as well as get time to interact with the animals. Students with peanut allergies shouldn't sign up for this.
• Inside ARLGP: What does an animal shelter do? Where do shelter animals come from? Who works at a shelter? How do you adopt an animal? We will give students a comprehensive overview of how the ARLGP supports our community and how we help animals find their new, happy homes.
• So Many Animals: Did you know that more than 6 million companion animals enter animal shelters in the United States each year? Why are there so many animals? This lesson will help students answer that question through exploration of different topics and real-life stories. Students will also use their math and critical thinking skills to determine ways we can help reduce the number of animals in shelters.
• Play It Safe: Do you know when an animal is happy, mad, or scared? Students will determine how to be safe around all kinds of animals, how to read their body language and how to interact with new animals as well as their own pets. This lesson focuses on safety, compassion and kindness in order to promote a healthy relationship between people and pets.

Certified Babysitting Course: 9:15-1:45; $55 for materials

• Safe Sitter® is designed to prepare students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. The Instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises. Students learn:
• Safety Skills: Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.
• Child Care Skills: Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.
• First Aid & Rescue Skills: Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. (CPR included in Safe Sitter® Essentials with CPR and Safe Sitter® Expanded.)
• Life & Business Skills: The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.

• During this session students will learn about the training that police dogs go through. A Maine State police officer will demonstrate how the dogs are trained and handled.
