What are permission numbers?
Permission numbers will bypass the established prerequisites in the system and allow students to enroll in your course.
How do I access my permission numbers?
Permission numbers are available to instructors in the Faculty Center in PeopleSoft. You can access Campus Solutions (PeopleSoft) from the myBoiseState home screen. Follow the steps outlined here to retrieve and assign permission numbers to students.
How do permission numbers work?
There are two types of permission numbers - N and Y.
N -> Override a prerequisite
Y -> Override a prerequisites and allow a student to enroll in a class that is closed (full)
The decision to give out a permission number to override a prerequisite is oHowften nuanced. Some courses are expected to be taken in sequences, where the material in one course heavily builds upon knowledge students are expected to have acquired in a previous class. For example, it is important that students successfully complete PSYC 295 with a C or better BEFORE enrolling in PSYC 321.
There may be many reasons affecting your decision to offer or deny a student a permission number for your course. The matrix below may help guide you in the decision-making process for overriding prerequisites, but ultimately the decision is yours. When in doubt, please reach out to Mary Pritchard at MaryPritchard@boisestate.edu
Note: Many faculty have requested that the Department Leadership team handle giving out their permission numbers so they can avoid that hassle. You can read about your options here. After you've read that document, please indicate your preference for handling your permission numbers here.
If you need additional permission numbers, you may request them here.
There are many factors that go into designing your course and we are here to help!
