(10%) HW5 will be assigned Nov 18 and involves two volcano movie portrayals from Hollywood. Options include: Dante's Peak (1997), Volcano (1997), Supervolcano (BBC docudrama on YouTube) , but I'm open to others added to this list (in advance).
(10%) HW4 assigned October 30 - watch two of the following three films and write a one page overview of your impression of two films. Length of document should be between 350 and 450 words total and should include your impression of accuracy and objectivity. Suggested format is two paragraphs with 100 word synopsis for each of the films and then a summary paragraph comparing and contrasting the 'documentary' styles. Optional to watch all three!

(10%) HW3 assigned October 23 - This is a short assignment focused on volcano monitoring (using earthquakes) and is due in one week's time on October 30th (ok to turn in on November 4th). Materials needed for this assignment will be passed out, but can also be found here.

PNW_MAP_Google_Earth.pdf(10%) HW2 overview - This is supposed to be a 'fun' assignment. Identify a volcano of interest and print out a digital 3D model of that volcano. Then paint its hazards. This is a multi-week assignment to be done in teams of two (or three) and presented early October in class. Your team will also work together to present a final project in the second half of the semester focused on this featured volcano.
Instructions:
select a 'unique' volcano and a team by October 2 - we'll put the volcano assignments here at the bottom of the spreadsheet Please try to pick a volcano that is at low latitudes between 60 degrees South and 60 degrees North as these have better map resolutions
schedule print date for members of your team (ideally following class on Tu/Thurs October 7, 9, 14). You will go to ERB3112 for this exercise. Expect to take 30 to 45 minutes (hopefully we'll be done by 5 PM).
Prior to noon on the day of your print you must provide: 1) volcano name, 2) center latitude and longitude of your volcano, 3) horizontal extent of volcano (in kilometers), 4) anticipated print vertical exaggeration, and 5) a low resolution STL model of your volcano that you can make here
Bring your print to class on October 21. Turn in a hard copy printout of the same 'area' as your 3D print using a Google Earth layer, e.g., here. Here's an example of your instructor's volcano georeferenced to his model - Villarrica.
Assignment is due October 23 in class.
(10%) HW1 overview - This exercise will focus on digital elevation models for a hazardous volcano using Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier (which we will introduce and work on together in class). We will also explore common cartographic concepts for displaying maps. Use paper handouts to make contour maps AND accurate profiles. Deliverables:
a contour map for MSH with 250 meter contour elevation resolution
draft an accurate profile from A to A' and specify the vertical exaggeration
for MSH sketch the outline of what you think the volcano looked like prior to May 18, 1980. How tall was it?
