I'm looking forward to presentations for the final project for DSP. Thanks to all of you for being flexible on timing. I'm going to suggest that all three of you present on Monday May 5th starting 9:00 AM in our regular classroom.
Prior to that meeting please send me a link or a document that I can use for your presentation. I suggest shooting for a 15 minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of questions.
You should include 10 to 12 slides including:
- title slide(s) with rationale for your analysis and interest in the data
- the nature of the data (be specific about sample rate or pixel size and source of data)
- outline a hypothesis of what you expect(ed) from the data
- provide at least one DSP tool (spectral analysis, filtering, etc...) applied to the data
- give an overview of whether the analysis was useful and what you learned
- if this is part of your graduate work, specify what might be next steps in your research
Let me know if you have questions.
As for as the final exam I'd like to give you two options: Option #1 is to take it on Monday May 5th after the oral presentations. Option #2 would be on Wednesday May 7th at 9:00 AM class time. Note that your decision does not need to be unanimous, i.e., some of you can do Monday and some can do Wednesday (if you want). Study guide for that exam is to look at all previous class "quizzes". Exam will be open book and open note and open computer.
We will have regular class on Wednesday February 19. See you tomorrow.
No formal class today (President's Day). Instead we will do in-person meetings. I have the following:
James at 10:30 on the 20th
Parker at 3:00 on the 20th
Torvon at ?
Emma at ?
Thanks for meeting for class twice today! The homework assignment given out today will be due on Friday the 21st. As a reminder, there will be no class on Monday the 17th (President's Day) and also no class on Wednesday the 19th.
Instead, I'm asking to set up individual appointments for Thursday the 20th (if possible) to talk about class projects (for grad students enrolled in GEOPH520) and/or extra help related to materials we have recently covered.
I am available all day on Thursday except for 11 AM to 12 and 1 to 2 PM. Please let me know what time is good for you to meet (please provide a preference for 30 minute window) and respond directly to this thread. Since we only have four students it shouldn't be too unwieldy.
Friday would also be a possibility if Thursday doesn't work.
No class on February 17 (President's Day) next week. So on February 12 we will have a bonus class! In the morning it will be regular class and at noon we will introduce the homework assignment (#4).
See you tomorrow January 22 at 9:00 AM for normal lecture hour. We'll also have a practicum (hands-on) session at noon tomorrow to go over the homework assignment, which will be due in one week on January 29.
Thank you for your flexibility with regards to class tomorrow Wednesday January 15. We will hold class at noon to 1:15 in ERB2104 (same classroom). Please don't show up at 9:00 AM!
Hope your break was great. I'm looking forward to DSP class with you all starting Monday. It's a pretty small group (4 right now), but there are a few others that might be joining us. I don't anticipate much more than 6 or 7 in total so this will give us an opportunity to incorporate (if you want) some of your own research materials into the class focus.
In any case, I wanted to reach out and share with you the class website at tinyurl.com/dsp2025... let me know if you have any issues with access. This is where all material will. Canvas will pretty much only be used for grading.
Please let me know if you have any questions. -Jeff
