Shad O'Neel

Research Scientist for the US Army Corps of Engineers

Historically, Shad's research centered on mountain glacier change. He has worked on iceberg calving and rapid tidewater glacier retreat, and spent over a decade leading the USGS Benchmark Glacier Mass Balance Project. The USGS team integrated long-term observational records for 5 glaciers, and linked the observed changes to downstream ecosystems.  Currently, Shad works as a research scientist for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL).  Shad's work has shifted towards seasonal snow science, working to understand watershed-scale snow patterns using LiDAR and radar techniques. Away from the office you can find Shad pedaling a bike, climbing a rock, or skiing in the mountains with family or friends.
