The Boise School District, working in conjunction with the Idaho Department of Environmental

Quality and the Central District Health Department, has adopted the following procedure for dealing

with periods of poor air quality in the Treasure Valley.

1. The Department of Environmental Quality maintains several air sampling stations throughout the

county and evaluates air quality readings and weather forecasts to determine an Air Quality

Index (AQI). This forecasted AQI will be posted on the Department of Environmental Quality

website before 9:00 am each weekday. The AQI posted each morning will be a forecast of the

highest levels expected to be reached that day.

2. Individual buildings should follow the recommendations found on the attached

“Recommendations for Schools and Others on Poor Air Quality Days”. These recommendations

are divided by activity (e.g. recess, athletic practice) and by Air Quality Level.

3. As always, parent/guardians have the final word regarding student participation in activities. If a

parent feels that his or her student should not participate due to health concerns surrounding poor

air quality, no adverse actions will be taken against the student.

4. If Air Quality Levels reach the Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) level or higher, the

district will notify the following individuals via email; Athletic Directors, Athletic Trainers,

Nurses, Health Technicians, Principals and Program Administrators.

5. If air quality levels reach the Red level (Unhealthy) level or higher high-exertion outdoor

activities will be moved indoors and considerations will be given to rescheduling or relocating

outdoor athletics. This decision will be coordinated through the Superintendency. Any decisions

reached will be predicated on current and location-specific air quality assessment through the

Department of Environmental Quality.

6. In some limited circumstances it is possible for the air quality reading to be changed in the

afternoon (weather system changes, nearby wild-land fires, etc). In most cases this re-evaluation

will take place by 2:00 pm and if it includes an upgrade to orange or higher, notification will be

sent out from the district office.
