Course Description:

The Adult Living curriculum focuses on the young adult as an individual balancing responsibilities of home, family, community, and work environments. The student will gain relationship and life skills, knowledge of relationship roles and responsibilities, problem solving, resource management skills, leadership, and 21st century employability skills. Adult Living is designed as a full year project and problem-based course recommended for 11th and 12th grade students. Half of the course will focus on interpersonal relationships, financial literacy and workplace readiness and the second will focus on personal management.

  • Buying food on a budget

  • Balanced Diet

Unit 3: Being a wise consumer & how we are affected by media and technology

  • Difference between wants vs needs

  • How to comparison shop

  • How to spend discretionary income

  • Medias affect on consumer buying decisions

  • Technology addiction

  • Solutions to harmful technology

Unit 4: Housing, Utilities, & Furnishings

  • Housing options and factors to consider

  • Identify all costs (ex: deposit, first and last month rent, etc.)

  • Income to housing ratio (rule of thumb for how much to spend on housing)

  • Understanding a lease agreement

  • Identify different utilities and how to set them up

  • Cost of utilities

  • Compare and contrast furnishing costs

Unit 5: Demonstrate Management of Financial Resources to Meet the Goals of Individuals and Families Across the Lifespan

  • Fixed and flexible expenses

  • Wage rates, paycheck deductions & taxes

  • Credit cards vs debit cards (pitfalls to avoid when using credit)

  • Budgeting simulation

  • Investing your money…rule of 72

  • Different types of insurance

  • How to handle and resolve conflict in the workplace

  • Being a team player

  • Problem solving in the workplace

  • Assertive vs Aggressive (know the difference in the workplace)

Adult Living 2

Examine the Role of Relationships Including Family Throughout the Lifespan

  • Explore changing goals across the family life cycle

  • Explore the protective factors for strengthening family relationships

  • Analyze roles and responsibilities of purposeful and impactful parenting

  • Analyze your role and responsibilities with aging family members


Examine the Impact of Interpersonal Relationships Throughout the Lifespan

  • Examine your personal identity as it relates to independence and relationships

  • Analyze the effect of healthy and unhealthy relationships
