Administration of Medications at School

Over the Counter Medications

Junior high school students are not allowed to carry their own over the counter medications at school. The only exception is self-carry emergency medications.

The school nurse and designated staff members are authorized to give basic over the counters with parent/guardian permission.

Prescription Medications

If your student needs to take prescription medication while at school, the medication must be kept in the health office and administered by school health staff, or designee.

A Medication Authorization form will need to be completed and on file for students to take prescription medication at school.

Emergency Medications

Many junior high school students prefer to carry their own emergency medications - such as inhalers and/or epi-pens - vs keeping them in the health office.

If your student plans to self carry one or more of these medications, please contact the school nurse to discuss if your student is ready to do this. There are two forms parents need to complete: Medication Authorization and Authorization to Self Carry and Administer medication.
