Welcome to 5th and 6th Grade Band!
I am so excited to work with you this year in band! This website is meant to be a helpful resource with documents, schedule information and links that you can use during your musical journey this year. Please take a look at all of the information about my two classes offered and let me know if you have any questions at any point during the school year.
Beginning Band
This is everyone's first year on their instrument. Most of this class is focused on producing a good sound and acquiring facility and confidence on the notes learned. We will work out of Accent on Achievement, Book 1, and learn about how band uses the elements of music in our playing.
Intermediate Band
For most students, this is the second year on their instrument. We will continue where we left off in Accent on Achievement, Book 1, and possibly begin working out of Book 2. Intermediate Band builds on skills learned in Beginning Band, so we will learn more scales and be able to play more technical music on our instruments, as well as begin to be musically expressive. This is the year where we also begin to work on "full band" music in addition to the method book, so students get an idea of what their junior high band experience will be like.
Performance Opportunities:
Band performs 2-3 times per school year, depending on the school and events occurring in any given year. There is typically one school/parent performance per semester. Other performances include joint concerts with the feeder junior high school.
About me
Originally from Illinois, I was raised in the Chicago suburbs playing piano, clarinet and singing in many ensembles and programs. I also grew up a teacher’s kid and decided early on that I wanted to be a teacher just like my mom. I earned my Bachelor’s of Music Education from Illinois Wesleyan University and following graduation, I moved to Idaho and spent 4 years teaching K-12 music in the Bruneau-Grand View School District. In May 2021, I completed my graduate degree in Music Performance at Boise State University, where I studied clarinet and conducting. This year I am beginning my fifth year in the Boise School District!
When I’m not teaching, I also direct the choir and music program at my church and conduct or participate in several community bands. My husband and I love hiking, reading, making music together, and exploring the beautiful Treasure Valley.
