In order to find out what students already have an interest in, we surveyed them early in first and second quarter. Based in part on what they said and on who we were able to engage, we scheduled guest career speakers.
Before each speaker's presentation, we survey students on their level of current interest in the career about to be presented. We send out a shared doc that asks students to add their questions for the speaker. And after the speaker's presentation, we survey students once more to find out if the presentation sparked any new interest or other thoughts in the students.
We aren't yet comparing apples to apples in our gathering of data. We can't really create a control group...we can't always rely on students who attend the presentations to complete the surveys...we don't always know the reasons for students NOT attending the presentations even if they express interest in the career presented. However, we have the beginnings of data that shows students becoming aware of Career Café and its aims and the feedback from those students who attend is positive.
Questions students had before our Career Café presentations:
How can I get to apply for as many scholarships as I can?
I've been talking to Mrs. Kruse about a scholarship. I also got a letter in the mail from the Idaho board of education saying based on my GPA I get to go to these specific schools. all I have to figure out for that is which ones have the best art program and which ones will also go with the scholarship I'm working on getting
I'm just curious on how to start the process, what I mean by this is I have a semi-made range of things I want to do but I don't really know what to research and where to get started with all of it.
What steps should I be taking right now especially as it gets closer to graduation? What are options for financial aid? How do I complete the FAFSA - when it asks for tax returns and I don't have one, will I need to give my parents?
How to build a portfolio, when to apply for the college I want to go to, how to build a strong portfolio so I can get accepted.
Coping with living in a world with a system (Capitalism) that is actively working against the average person (not rich or without privilege)?
Deciding what college is best for me.
I would just like to know how someone like me can get to the place I want to be- the path seems very abstract and even just a rough guide would be helpful. I specifically want to be a prosthetics engineer.
How would I get a computer science internship that pays well enough for me to graduate debt free and get the experience I want?
how do stocks work? should I Invest?
I just wonder what would be the most practical career path for me.
How do I do something that I want without disappointing my parents?
how do i know what college to pick? how do i apply for scholarships? when should i start applying to different colleges? how many should i apply to?
How profitable are music and visual arts jobs generally?
How do taxes work?
