We asked students at Borah what they do when they get "stuck" in math. Below are the strategies and advice they gave:
I ask a friend in the class for help.
I ask my teacher for help during class.
I ask a family member for help.
I look at the answer key and use that to work backwards.
I do AVID tutorials.
I take breaks. Sometimes I can think better when I step away and come back refreshed.
I use our Google Classroom resources:
Lesson videos
Homework help videos
Test review videos
Answer Keys
I try and take good notes with detailed steps so I can look through them later when I need help or am studying for a test.
When the teacher is done giving us notes, I like to go back and write how or why I am doing a problem a certain way to help me remember when I go back and look at my notes.
I highlight anything in my notes that my teacher says, “This is a probable test question.”
I watch videos on the topic I'm struggling with:
My teacher makes videos and posts them in our Google Classroom
Khan Academy has helpful tutorial videos
YouTube has videos
I ask Google.
I look over past assignments.
I repeat things over and over till I understand (‘practice, practice, practice’)
Sometimes I do the review several times before the test
I go to Lions Den after school and study with friends.
I have a tutor.
I go to Desmos (if it involves graphs).
I like to compare my work to others correct work to see where I went wrong.
I always watch the review video my teacher makes before a test or a retake.
Every night I spend 5-10 minutes going over my math to remember what we learned that day and review the steps for those problems.
I try to get good sleep and eat healthy foods to help me feel better and think more clearly.
I use Photomath, Cymath, or Mathway to see the steps to help me better understand what I am doing.
I ask for help right away. When I wait, things get harder and then I get overwhelmed.
I added math seminar to have more time to work on my assignments and ask questions.
I make flashcards. This helps me study when I have extra free time in other classes.
I try to eliminate distractions. I find that when I focus on what I am doing, things make sense much more quickly.
