“Don’t Settle for Ordinary. Be EXTRAordinary”
It is easy to be ordinary. Ordinary teams do average things; they practice the same number of hours as everyone else. On any given day, a couple of players are late or missing, but they usually have a good reason. Ordinary teams have players who only just want to get through practice so they can play in games. Ordinary teams have players who are easily distracted during practice, only listen when it’s convenient for them to do so, and only work when pushed by their coach.
Ordinary teams have players who don’t “buy in” to the bigger picture. Ordinary teams have players who are more concerned with their own stats, recognition, and minutes. Ordinary teams have “cliques” within the team, with no strong community amongst the team. Ordinary teams look at roles as limiting and are threatened when another teammate competes for the same role.
Ordinary teams have players who support one another and the coach when they are winning, but things aren’t going smoothly, they look for others’ to blame. Ordinary teams win some games and lose some games, and when the season is over, they talk about “what could have been” or “what if” or “what should have happened.” If you are okay with being ordinary, it is easy to obtain. We are NOT an ordinary team.
Be extraordinary. “Extra” is in the prefix of the word. Be extra. Overly communicate if you are to miss anything. Push yourself extra hard during practice, and in doing so, you push your teammates standing beside you to do the same. Make drills extra competitive, so the atmosphere of a game seems like nothing. Buy into the bigger picture of the team and embrace your role, “fist” philosophy. Take ownership of what you can control and don’t point fingers. Let’s spend the end of the season talking about what DID happen, and not what should’ve happened. We have the ability to be extraordinary, it’s an everyday decision. Let’s make that choice.
