'Ka kōkiri ngātahi tātou kia eke pānuku'
Kī tonu ana te ngākau i te mahi nei! Even after 20 years in this field, helping tamariki and taiohi still fills my heart! l find joy in the small yet significant moments of teaching. The quiet security students feel in the classroom and the smiles and greetings first thing in the morning. The proud tears of parents and whānau falling as they watch their tamariki shine on stage and the confidence that slowly blossoms over time as students realise that they can achieve what they thought was impossible! It is for these tiny moments that I choose to be a teacher.
My introduction to the world of teaching started at the tender age of 14. While girls my age were hanging out and going through teenage drama, I was teaching tamariki how to twirl a poi, sing a waiata and perform an action song. Tutoring kapa haka had become my whole world and, it still is today. While I have been formally educated at renowned institutions such as The University of Auckland, the foundations of my practice as a professional teacher in Aotearoa started in my backyard at home. What I learnt about how tamariki learn best back then has remained true throughout the years. Learning is reciprocal, your teaching practice must be both solid and fluid and you must always believe that your students are capable of success.
When my late father Manuel Maunsell introduced kapa haka into our world at home, it saved us. This path has shaped my beliefs, guided my decisions and helped my whānau and I to serve a purpose greater than ourselves. My goal is to pursue Mātauranga Māori so that I am more capable in my endeavours to empower our taiohi through Te Ao Haka, Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga.
