Phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, and word study are critical pieces to becoming a fluent reader and writer. We need to explicitly teach these within our daily ELA instruction. UFLI, Fundations, and Into Reading all provide daily whole group foundational skills lessons in grades K-2. Grades 3-5 have whole group Into Reading Foundational Skills lessons provided twice a week.Â
Carefully chosen decodable texts (Start-Right Readers/Blend-it Books/UFLI passages) are valuable tools to help students K-2 meaningfully apply their growing phonics skills. Older students with significant phonics needs may also benefit from focused instruction using decodables. Explicit skill development, such as lessons found in Into Reading's Foundational Skill and Word Study Studio, UFLI, or Word Connections, should also be a focus in small group time if students need more intensive practice in these areas.Â
