This introductory course develops students’ ability to communicate in Spanish at a basic level in everyday contexts. Emphasis is placed on building a foundational linguistic repertoire and applying it through the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. Students learn to understand and produce simple messages related to familiar topics while developing awareness of cultural practices, products, and perspectives of Spain and Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas. This sequential course reinforces and expands the foundational skills developed in Spanish I (Novice). Students increase their ability to communicate in Spanish by engaging with authentic language and contextualized input. Instruction continues to emphasize the three modes of communication while broadening vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural understanding related to everyday situations. The ACTFL Proficiency for this course is Novice Mid-Novice High.Prerequisites:

This honors-level course expands students’ communicative abilities through the study of more advanced grammatical structures and vocabulary. Students participate in sustained conversations on familiar and some abstract topics and further develop proficiency in the three modes of communication. Cultural exploration of the Spanish-speaking world is integrated throughout the course. Instruction is conducted primarily in Spanish. The ACTFL Proficiency for this course is Intermediate Low.Special Notes:

This advanced course provides a comprehensive review and expansion of previously studied language functions and grammatical structures. Students refine their ability to narrate, describe, and summarize across time frames in all three modes of communication. Instruction includes reading and discussion of fiction and nonfiction texts from a variety of media. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish. The ACTFL Proficiency for this course is Intermediate High-Advanced Low.Special Notes:
