Florida History traces the human history of Florida from pre-Columbian times to its present exponential growth period. Topics to be studied will include Florida’s role in Europe’s struggle for empire, Florida’s territorial and early statehood period, Florida in the Civil War and its aftermath, and the astonishing growth of Florida during the 20th century. Students will develop skills in historical research to examine how since its beginnings, Florida has been a place where multiple cultures, generations and ideas have influenced what it means to be a Floridian.Prerequisites:

This course introduces students to the study of the cultural, political and economic interactions among states and non-state actors in global politics. Special attention is paid to key issues, including international security, foreign policy decision-making, and the role of diplomacy in promoting cooperation. Latin American Studies is a core elective designed to introduce students to the history and culture of Hispanic societies across the Caribbean, Central and South America. The course encompasses political theory, social class structure, economic organization, culture and religion, and stresses the economic relationship of Latin American nations to other nations. Spanning pre-historic times to the present, Latin American Studies takes both a chronological and a nation-by-nation approach. Contemporary issues are emphasized in this ever-changing and vital region of the world.Prerequisites:

This course offers an introduction to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. It provides content and scope of psychology as a behavioral science. Topics of study include research, development, learning, intelligence, motivation, emotion, personality, abnormal psychology and social psychology. Women’s Studies Honors will allow students to focus on the role of women throughout history and in today’s society. This course emphasizes women’s changing and consistent issues throughout time and in other areas of the world, comparing the roles and expectations of women in various regions and cultures. Students will also identify women who have broken social and cultural barriers, and analyze the issues that women continue to face today. The course will discover how womanhood has been represented in myths, ads, and popular culture and how gender inequalities can be both explained, critiqued and changed through policy.
