This year-long class is designed for students with some previous experience in a choral performing group. Students study and perform a wide variety of musical styles including Classical, Gospel, 20th Century and Pop. Rehearsals focus on the development of critical listening/aural skills; foundational techniques, music literacy, ensemble performance, and aesthetic musical awareness. Public performances in a variety of venues may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals throughout the year. After this course, students may go on to audition for the Lourdes Singers.Special Notes:

This year-long, honors course is designed for students with emerging skills in critical listening, vocal techniques, music literacy, and choral performance. Singers explore advanced pieces in historical and cultural context, and develop advanced musicianship and choral ensemble skills. Rehearsals focus on providing students with the opportunity to learn how to analyze musical techniques in order to improve their own and others’ performance. Public performances in a variety of venues may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals throughout the year. Past performances include: Merrick Festival Caroling Competition, Festival Disney, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, NYC. This course may be followed by Lourdes Singers II, III, IV, or V.Special Notes:

Students with previous instrumental ensemble experience build musicianship and performance skills through the study, rehearsal, and performance of high-quality ensemble literature in a variety of styles. Students collaborate as they study relevant musical styles and compose their own literature. Chamber players will be featured in combined concerts with Choral Music students and school masses. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend and assess learning in the classroom. This course is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors and may be followed by Chamber Ensemble II, III and IV.Special Notes:

In this course, students build mastery in musicianship skills through the study, rehearsal, and performance of high-quality vocal jazz literature. Rehearsals focus on foundational jazz styles, developing knowledge of musical structure, improvisation and the history of jazz and its iconic musicians. Public performances in a variety of venues may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals throughout the year. Past performances include: WDNA Jazz Fest, and Festival Disney, among others. This course may be followed by Jazz Catz II, and III.Special Notes:

Advanced Placement Music Theory is designed to provide the same benefits to high school students as are provided by a first –year college music theory course. The goal of this course is to develop the student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. AP Music Theory is a rigorous course for music students interested in understanding and analyzing music composition. This course presents an understanding of the practices of how music is notated. While the bulk of the course is focused on music of the 17th Century through the early 20th Century, additional Contemporary music will be analyzed.Special Notes:
Students in this course are required to take the Advanced Placement Exam; AP Exam fees will be processed through FACTS account.
