The freshman course is offered at the Honors level (Level 4). The material covered is designed to reinforce and/or challenge the individual student’s ability. This course includes both language skills and literature. The language arts and communication program encompasses both written and oral development of language. Correct usage, grammar, sentence and paragraph study, vocabulary development, dictionary and research skills are presented in a developmental sequence to assure achievement. Note taking and paraphrasing from source material, together with an introduction to the MLA method of documentation, is practiced. The argumentative essay is a major focus. The literature program introduces the students to the various literary genres, providing study in mythology, the epic, short story, novel, poetry, drama and non-fiction. This course emphasizes critical reading and critical thinking skills. The goals and objectives for this course are aligned to the National Standards and they align vertically to the College Board’s AP Program.
