The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop and use higher level writing and language skills for advanced creative expression in a variety of literary forms. This semester course emphasizes the development of skills in the creation and study of prose, drama, and poetry in an intensive workshop setting where peer editing and critique will be utilized to build on student performance. Emphasis will be on the development of a personal writing style.Students are required to write in a variety of styles and genres, with a focus on poetry, poetic techniques, fiction, short non-fiction, character and dialogue development, and introduction to script writing. One guest speaker per quarter will introduce students to the applications of creative writing in various disciplines. The academic goals and objectives for course are aligned to the Common Core Standards.Since this course is offered at the honors level, students should expect academic rigor as they apply, analyze, and evaluate complex ideas that are often abstract and multi-faceted. Students can expect to be challenged to think and collaborate critically on content they are learning.
