In the spring, we read Sylvia & Aki which is a book with two main characters Sylvia Mendez and Aki Munemitsu. Both girls are living in California during World War II when Aki is told she must leave her home and go to an internment camp with other Japanese American families. Sylvia's leases Aki's family farm/home, but when her aunt tries to register Sylvia and her brothers along with her cousins she is told that her fair skinned cousins may attend the school, but she and her brothers must attend the "Mexican" school. This book was either a window (looking into the life of another person) or a mirror (a reflection of your life or an experience that was similar to Sylvia and Aki). Students were asked to write a letter to Sylvia or Aki letting them know how their story has impacted them.
