Delft is a city in Holland known for a particular style of porcelain tile that became popular in the 1600s. The background of the tiles were almost always white. Pictures and designs were painted, usually in blue, on this background. The pictures typically showed windmills, shoes, canals, or other scenes from Dutch life. Today there are lots of imitation Delft tiles made by machine and sold to tourists, but in the 1600’s Delft tiles were made by hand and were very expensive.
