PROJECT LEAD THE WAY BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM
PLTW Biomedical Science applies real-world issues by exploring topics like disease, DNA analysis, prosthetic design, public health, and more. Along the way, students gain experience with state-of-the-art tools and techniques that are used by professionals in hospitals and labs every day. By immersing students in activities like practicing suturing and constructing body structures from clay, PLTW Biomedical Science empowers students to build knowledge and skills in biomedical science, as well as in-demand, transportable skills like problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, and collaboration.
The following courses are required for this pathway:
From design and data analysis to outbreaks, clinical empathy, health promotion, and more, students explore the vast range of careers in biomedical sciences. They develop not just technical skills, but also in-demand, transportable skills that they need to thrive in life and career.
Formerly Anatomy & Physiology.
Students experience real-world scenarios and cases to see medicine in action – as they diagnose and provide treatment and rehabilitation to patients at an outpatient center, keep clients safe and healthy on adventure medicine trips in remote locations, and work in a research center to design laboratory investigations to explore development and aging.
Students delve into activities like designing a prosthetic arm as they follow the life of a fictitious family and investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.
Recommended Sequence:
Grade 9 - PLTW Biomedical Science
Grade 10- Biology & Human Body Systems
Grade 11- Medical Interventions & AP Biology *(recommended)
Grade 12- Capstone & Internship
Get real world experience by participating in a summer, after school or 4th quarter internship.
"Biomed is a very interesting, fun, and interactive class that gives students an eye-opening outlook on certain biomedical careers which helps prepare students for their future."
- Grace Buzzell, Junior
"Bio-med is great, you do a lot of actual medical work and testing that I would never have expected to be able to do at a high school level. It's very hands on and half the time I feel like I am a doctor actually working with a patient instead of a student sitting at a desk writing notes all day long like I do in every other class." - Abby Seffernick, Senior
Biomedical Science Pathway with Distinction Designation
In order to graduate with this designation, successful completion of a capstone project is required. The capstone presentation will be presented at a Capstone Celebration in mid May prior to the final school day for seniors.
