A Letter from our Founder and Director...

A Letter from our Founder and Artistic Director, Adalhi Aranda

Dear audience,

It is with great pleasure that we present Arabella’s

Journey once again! This performance has so many special meanings for all of us at BYB. This is the first time that we are able to perform to a live audience since Nutcracker of 2019. Since then, we have craved and dreamed of being on stage with an audience to provide us with support and energy.

After the last challenging 15 months of cancelled performances, virtual classes, financial struggles, masked dancing and not being able to allow every parent in the studio, tonight feels extra special. While rehearsing Arabella, I felt so grateful for each and every day that we are able to dance and be together.

Choosing Arabella’s Journey to celebrate the end of the 2020-21 school year seemed like the perfect alternative to the actual traveling (or lack of) in our current state of pandemia. Rehearsals started months before the performance and with the uncertain times, we chose something that the students could rehearse safely with their own class/country. It is also a joyful ballet and fun for the students to learn and perform new dance forms!

I am such a big fan of world cultures and what we can learn from them, the different styles of music, costumes and of course different dance forms. I believe that learning about other cultures gives us a new sense of perspective and understanding for our diverse community, and it brings us closer to living in a state of respect and awe for each other.

I am honored and proud to recognize our four seniors this year and thrilled to be able to provide a closure performance for them. Lindy, Madelyn, Lindsey and Anna Maria have been part of my life (and BYB’s life) since they were Honey Fairy size. The memories we made together are unforgettable and so close to my heart. I am looking forward to following them in their next ‘journeys’ as they bring the lessons learned through the BYB years with them.

I am so lucky to be able to be part of all of our student’s lives and their families. I cannot imagine where I would be without BYB and its amazing community of love and generosity. Parents tell me all the time how BYB has been a constant in the kid’s lives and are so grateful for that; but the reality is that I am equally grateful for them. It’s a beautiful balance and I know I speak also for each one of our faculty members.

I hope you enjoy this performance, thanks for traveling with me!

Arabella's Story

It is June 1925, in New York City. Arabella is a famous, beautiful, and wealthy performer. Despite her arrogance and self centered personality, she finds herself surrounded by adoring admirers.

Arabella receives a ticket for a journey around the world on an ocean liner. She frantically begins to pack for the trip, with her loyal maid by her side. When Arabella arrives at the port, she hires a sailor to carry her luggage, and together, they board the ship. Despite the sailor’s greatest hopes for romance, Arabella is too preoccupied with her own plans to connect with him emotionally.

They cross the Atlantic, and finally spot land. When they arrive in Spain, Arabella is anxious to swim in the ocean. Unfortunately for her, a group of mischievous gypsies distracts the sailor from his porter duties, and he loses track of time. Arabella must continue her travels without him and without her luggage. After visiting many corners of the world, she is finally reunited with her luggage and her sailor in Mexico. But Arabella is no longer who she used to be….

Senior Spotlight

Anna Maria Seebold

I am a graduate of Bryan Station High School and their Spanish Immersion Program where I received the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. My journey started at BYB in 2008 and I enjoyed the sense of family that was developed over the years. I love how I can always be myself without fear of judgement, making every day at BYB enjoyable. My favorite role at BYB was Alice in Alice in Wonderland. I was also accepted into both the Emerging Leaders Science Program and Honors Program at Purdue University. Furthermore, I won third place in the 2021 Congressional Art Competition for my still life drawing. I plan on attending Purdue University with a major in biology and a minor in dance.

I would like to give a special thanks to all of the teachers at BYB who have invested their time and effort into my future, as I know that without them, I would not have learned how to push myself beyond my limits. I also want to thank my family who has supported me through all of the injuries and tough decisions that ballet has brought me. Finally I want to send my love to my BYB family that I am leaving behind; you will remain in my heart forever and I can’t wait to see what all of you accomplish!

Lindsey Long

Lindsey began her dancing journey at the age of eight, in 2011, and has been selected for lead roles in Bluegrass Youth Ballet’s Dia de los Muertos, The Nutcracker in One Act, Cinderella, Alebrijes, Alice in Wonderland, and others. Her favorite role was as a dolphin in The Little Mermaid. As a Pre-Professional student at Bluegrass Youth Ballet (BYB), she has been exposed to opportunities for self-improvement both as an artist and as a person through the ballet community. Outside of BYB, she is a fourth season company dancer and adaptive dance class volunteer with the non-profit contemporary dance company, The Allégro Dance Project.

Lindsey is graduating from Lafayette High School as a Pre-Engineering Program student and member of the highly selective Chamber Orchestra as a violist. She was a recent graduate of the 2020 Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program and has been actively engaged with her school and the Lexington community as Vice-President of the Lafayette National Honor Society, member of Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club, Gig Group, Student Council, and recently through her internships with “FoodChain Lexington” and “The American Red Cross”.

Lindsey will be attending The Ohio State University in the fall of 2021 on two generous scholarships pursuing a major in Public Health (Environmental) and a double minor in both Humanitarian Engineering and Dance.

She is extremely thankful for the wonderful teachers at BYB, her loving family, and all of the kindhearted and talented friends she has had the honor of dancing with throughout the years.

Lindy Fischer

Lindy Fischer is a 2021 graduate of SCAPA at Lafayette High School as a Ballet major. She has been training and performing with Bluegrass Youth Ballet for eleven years. The teachers and other dancers at BYB quickly became family and a second home to her. Lindy has been featured in leading roles such as Estelita in Dia De Los Muertos, Alice from Alice in Wonderland in 15 Dances, and as Clara, Snow Queen, Spanish Lead, and Chinese Lead in The Nutcracker. In the summer of 2019, she attended the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts for dance. Lindy is honored to have participated with the Allegro Dance Project for two seasons as a company member as well as an assistant teacher for adaptive dance classes. She has also enjoyed being an assistant teacher for beginning ballet classes at BYB. In the Fall, Lindy will continue to pursue her passion for dance by attending the Mahurin Honors College at Western Kentucky University and double majoring in Dance Performance and Photojournalism. Lindy is beyond grateful for the love, guidance, instruction, and support her teachers, friends, and other dancers gave her while at BYB.

Madelyn Groth

Madelyn Groth is a recent graduate from Lafayette Highschool and was a ballet major in the SCAPA ballet program. Madelyn has been dancing since she was two, she started formal ballet training at bluegrass youth ballet at age six. Currently she is in the pro-professional level. Madelyn has had the opportunity to perform featured roles such as “Clara” , Dew drop, and Chinese lead in the Nutcracker, The Nightingale in 15 dances, and The Dormouse in Alice in Wonderland. Madelyn currently volunteers at bluegrass youth ballet as an assistant teacher and substitute for the younger levels. Last summer she participated in the Governor’s School for the Arts in dance. This summer Madelyn will be a company member for Allegro Dance Project. In the fall Madelyn will be a freshman at Western Kentucky University. She will be an honors student continuing her dance training as a dance major and double majoring in nutrition. Madelyn wants to thank her family, friends, and teachers for pushing and inspiring her to be her best and making her the person she is today.
