Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by George Furth
Directed by Dylan Chenier
When Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along" made its Broadway debut on November 16, 1981, the show did not resonate with audiences. Considered one of the biggest flops in American musical theatre history, the original production of "Merrily" ran for just 16 performances and 44 previews. Despite its initial shortcomings, critics of the original Broadway run praised Sondheim's traditional yet innovative score, which, coupled with George Furth's witty and dynamic book, established the foundation for a rich piece of theatre. Over the years, "Merrily" has gone through extensive revisions, solidifying its place as one of Sondheim's most cherished works.Â
I'm almost embarrassed to admit I wasn't aware of the wonder that is "Merrily" until I watched Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez perform 'Old Friends' during the 2024 Tony Awards. I was immediately drawn in by the chemistry displayed between the three main characters and the book's full-hearted embrace of the power that lies in friendship.Â
"Merrily We Roll Along" is a musical that forces everyone to confront the fleeting nature of time and the struggle to obtain fulfillment. Centred on the friendship between talented composer Franklin Shepard, gifted playwright Charles Kringas, and best-selling novelist Mary Flynn, the show departs from traditional customs and starts at the end of the characters' journey, with each scene taking us further back in time. Along the way, we watch as the cynicism and disappointment that haunts the opening scene fade, making way for an infectious sense of youthful optimism in Act 2. With the knowledge audiences are given in the show's opening scene, the ending can seem especially heartbreaking. However, "Merrily" is so much more than a tragedy. This is a show that celebrates the everlasting power of undeniable love and friendship. But it's also a cautionary tale of the consequences that come with following your dreams, and the need to nurture the relationships that matter most to us.Â
It has been an absolute privilege directing the summer 2025 adult show for Blue Canoe. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside this superbly talented cast and crew. It's a gift to direct a team of such dedicated young artists, all of whom have exciting futures ahead of them. I truly believe this production has shaped up to be something truly special, and you are all in for a real treat.Â
As Frank says, "Please come back and bring a friend. Or come back and make a friend. Or just come back and be a friend."Â
Enjoy the show!Â
Please note that this production contains some flashing lights and haze.Â
