Introduction to Agriculture

Geared toward Freshmen, this class introduces students to each agriculture career pathway as they learn about, practice for, and compete in over 20 career and leadership development events.
Agriculture Science
1 year, counts as KHS science credit
Sophomores take this agriculture course to study plant and animal sciences while practicing and participating in career development events. This class counts as science credit to satisfy KHS graduation requirements.
Veterinary Technology (VT100)
1 year, counts as KHS science credit & has dual credit option through BHE
Juniors & Seniors in this class study veterinary medicine terminology, history, clinic operations, animal anatomy and physiology, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, and diseases related to production livestock. Students also learn veterinary tools, parasites, animal breeds, and math associated with the Vet Science CDE. This class counts as science credit to satisy KHS graduation requirements. It is also a dual credit class through Black Hawk College, East Campus.
Ag Welding
1 semester
Junior & Senior students learn techniques for SMAW and MIG welding along, with plasma cutting and CNC machining. Students spend the semester in the shop welding and fine tuning their skills. They will also have the option to participate in various welding contests throughout the year.
Agriculture Mechanics
1 semester
Junior & Senior students study small engines, carpentry, welding, surveying, electricity, CNC machining, etc. as it relates to agriculture and the ag mechanics career development event. Students participate in classroom and lab activities.
Agriculture Business Foundations
1 semester, counts as KHS consumer education credit
This course introduces Junior & Senior students to business management in agriculture. Mathematics, reading, and writing components are used as they relate to agriculture. Students create business plans, study grain marketing, and gain knowledge in basic consumer education. Students can take this class in place of general consumer's education courses to satisfy KHS graduation requirements.
Greenhouse Production
1 semester
This course is designed to introduce Junior & Senior students to basic concepts and skills utilized in horticulture. Students learn botanical concepts such as morphology, anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, genetics, and propagation. They work in the greenhouses seeding, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, and caring for thousands of flowers. They assist with the annual plant sale as well as community service projects that include planting flowers and cleaning flower beds.
