Course Information
All students are provided Chromebooks and chargers by the school. Students are expected to come to class with a fully charged, operational Chromebook as it will be used in almost every class.
DeltaMath, iReady, Google Classroom, and McGraw Hill will be used to assign students homework and/or classwork assignments. Additionally, online 'games' like Quizizz, Gimkit, Kahoot, and Blooket will frequently be used for entertaining reinforcement. Any of these platforms may be used as a 'graded' assignment.
Tennessee Reveal Algebra 1, Volume 1 will be used throughout the first semester for notes and classwork and Tennessee Reveal Algebra 1, Volume 2 will be used throughout the second semester for notes and classwork.
A class set of TI-84 Plus CE calculators is available for student use during class. Students may not remove TI-84 Plus CE calculators from the room. Students may use online calculator resources such as Desmos or Geogebra in and out of class, with certain exceptions (some quizzes and exams).
AI is becoming a part of our lives, professionally and academically, whether we want it or not. I have explained to all my classes that this resource can be a valuable tool OR a thought-destroying crutch. I consider math a "practice discipline" which simply means that we will only get better if we practice. I try to use classtime for individual, partner, and small group practice. However, I encourage students to complete additional practice activities on their own. This outside-of-class practice could be a great use of AI! If we are letting apps like Gauth, ChatGPT, or PhotoMath do the work for us, this is a complete waste of time... If, however, we are using these (and MANY others) to check our work, show solution steps, and justify/explain answers, then this is a GREAT use of AI. When used for "good" and monitored these resources can be a valuable tool to enhance our learning.
We will be implementing multiple learning strategies: direct instruction (lecture & presentation), small collaborative groups, thinking partners, and student presentation. I will make every effort to provide class time for all learning, practice, assignments and assessments. Missed class time may lead to out-of-class "homework" to make up any missed opportunities.
Due to recent changes in state legislature, students are legally prohibited from accessing cellphones, headphones, e-watches, and other electronic devices during instructional time, defined as anytime between the bell signaling the start of a class period to the bell signaling the end of the class period (“bell-to-bell”).
Students violating this policy will be asked by the instructor to place their electronic device in a safe location specified by the instructor, where it will stay until the end of the period. At the end of the period, the instructor will deliver the electronic device to administration, where the student’s legal guardian will be required to come in-person and sign a document to retrieve the device.
Students who refuse to relinquish their electronic device will be referred to administration and face disciplinary action (in-school suspension) in addition to the above.
Following the student handbook, a student has the number of days which they were absent plus one additional day to complete and submit any makeup work.
Students are expected to correspond with the instructor about planned absences. In most cases, the instructor can provide materials for the student for absences discussed beforehand.
