Plagiarism: Plagiarism, cheating, and the use of any AI will not be tolerated. Students caught plagiarizing, cheating, or trying to pass AI work as his/her own will receive a zero on the assignment, no opportunity for retake, and possible additional consequences. As stated in the Student Handbook, “academic integrity is foundational to effective learning at Eagleton College & Career Academy. Academic integrity is expected when any and all assignments are submitted, including digital formats”.
Classwork: Based on the design of our curriculum, most work is to be completed in class. With this in mind, students should have more than enough time in which to complete assignments; therefore, students who are present for the majority of the class who actively choose not work on an assignment will not receive any extra time in which to complete the work; this may result in the final grade being a zero with no opportunity for a retake.
It is also Important for students to bear in mind that each assignment should be approached and completed as if it were for a grade even though not every assignment will be taken as a grade. This means taking all assignments seriously and completing them to the best of his/her ability.
Late Work: Due to the amount of students enrolled in English I and the amount of time given to work on assignments in class, no late work will be accepted. Should students need more time in which to complete assignments, it should be discussed with me prior to leaving class for the day; however, this will be to my discretion and is not a guarantee.
Make-Up Work: It is the responsibility of the students to check their class' folder for what notes or activities they missed while out. Should a student have questions regarding the work, it is his/her responsibility to reach out to me. Students will have a full calendar week (7 days) from the day he/she returns in which to complete any and all make-up work; any work after that will be considered late and not accepted. If, for whatever reason, this is not an adequate time frame in which to complete the work, the student is responsible for bringing it to my attention so that an alternative date can be set.
Retakes: Students will have the opportunity to choose three assignments on which to complete a retake during the nine weeks. Since students will only have one opportunity to achieve a better score per assignment, retakes should not be taken lightly and should be chosen and prepared for carefully. Due to their nature, certain assignments, such as essay planners, discussions, or essays, are not available for retake. Retakes should be completed one week prior to the end of the unit or the reporting period.
Homework:
9th Grade: Should a student have homework, it is more than likely because he/she wasn't able to finish an assignment in class; however, intentional assigning of homework will be posted in Classroom and will be discussed in class before dismissal.
9th Grade Honors: While students won't have homework every night, honors students should expect to complete certain assignments or projects outside of the classroom. Assignments or projects will be discussed ahead of time in class and posted to Classroom with reminders before they are due.
Procedures: How To's
How to Check Your Grade: Log into PowerSchool; what you see in PowerSchool is what I see on my screen. If you don't have a log in, the Guidance Office would be more than happy to help. And when it comes to grading or updating PowerSchool, I will do my absolute best to keep it as up to date as possible, but remember that I am human and have a life outside of school just like you, so I ask that you be patient with me, especially near the end of reporting periods.
How to Check for Make-Up Work: Upon entering the classroom, find your class period's tab in the hanging file folder located on the table beside the bookcases. In the folder, there should be a sheet with each day's agenda written out. Find the day(s) that you were absent to see what we covered in class and what assignment(s) you may need to complete. Any handouts that were given can also be found in that same file with your name already written on them.
Exceptions: Any quizzes or tests taken will need to be scheduled for a make-up day with me and will not be available In the file.
How to Schedule a Retake: Want to take a retake? No problem! Go to your Google Classroom, click on the Classwork tab, and fill out the English I Retake Request form. Once your request has been approved, you and I will schedule a time for your retake. Remember that...
Retakes will only be granted to students who put forth academic effort to complete the assignment when it was originally given.
Students are given one retake per assignment; the highest grade will be the grade of record.
To ensure that retakes are taken seriously, students will only be allowed to take retakes for three assignments per nine weeks.
All retakes should be completed a week prior to the end of the unit or the end of the reporting period.
How to Borrow or Ask for Materials: Need to borrow or ask for something for class? Not a problem! Ask at the beginning of class, and I'll get you set up; however, if class has already started, the best time to ask is during independent or group work time, not while I'm addressing the class or helping someone.
How to Get a Hall Pass: Since you have 5 minutes during class change, you are strongly encouraged to use the restroom or run other "errands" before coming to class; however, should the need arise, you can request a hall pass during an appropriate time. Once a hall pass has been granted, students will be sent one at a time on a first come, first served basis. Restrooms at the top of the stairwell are our "assigned" restrooms.
How to See the Nurse: *If it's an emergency, please let me know immediately.* At an appropriate time, let me know if you need to see the nurse. I will fill out a clinic referral for you, and then dismiss you whenever the nurse sends for you. Remember that you are required to wait until until she calls for you; I can't just send you once I submit the referral.
How to Borrow a Class Library Book: Choose your book. Bring me the book so that I may make a note of the check-out. When you're ready to turn it back in, hand the book to me; do not put the book back on the shelf yourself.
General Expectations
Have an open mind and a positive attitude.
Be on time and prepared.
Have your Chromebook charged and ready to go (even if we don't use it).
Maintain a clean work environment; this includes keeping all personal items at your desk or as close to your desk as possible, cleaning up any messes you make (intentional or not), and being mindful that while you are only in my room for a limited amount of time, I'm there all day.
Treat borrowed items or school materials with respect.
Use and navigate technology wisely; it is a privilege, not a right.
Last, and most importantly...
Treat everyone in your class with respect; not because they "earned it", but because they are people.
