When Randle McMurphy gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the martinet Nurse Ratched runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication, and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects all the ward's patients.

"Through the entire rehearsal process, watching my actors take on characters with unimaginable struggles has been fascinating and arduous, to say the least. As a counselor for special needs adults, I have seen the problems that many of the patients deal with manifest in real people. Likewise, I know the potential for special needs individuals to be taken advantage of or harmed through actions committed out of misunderstanding and malice alike. Today, I urge you to focus on the desires of each patient and realize that they hold commonalities with yours. The patients, like any other individual, want the security of respect and belonging. I hope that you are transformed by what you see, to recognize the worth within all people."
