Word Work

Word Work is a big part of our language arts curriculum. The students are based in a word work group based on their reading levels, writing skills, and an assessment of how well they can spell different word patterns. Students are no longer expected to go home and memorize words that they have learned. INSTEAD...students are learning common patterns in words, long and short vowel sounds, prefixes and suffixes, etc.

Throughout their word work period of the day students will be meeting with a teacher, working on a variety of sorts, as well as discussing those sort patterns with partners. This program helps students recognize patterns among words and encourages them to expand their vocabulary inside and outside of the classroom.

Based on your child's placement, homework is differentiated for each group. Tests will not be on memorized words, but will be on current patterns that your child is learning.
