Asian Unit

Throughout the unit on Asian Unit, students will use active reading strategies in order to enhance their comprehension. The focus will be on researching the author's background and the historical context of the text. Additionally, students will practice active reading by asking questions and making predictions. This will reinforce the notion that good readers use strategies.

Students will:

• Read the biography of R.K Narayan
• Read and analyze the short story, "Like the Sun" by R. K. Narayan and reflect on truth
• Review the difference between similes and metaphors
• Read the biography of Rabinadrath Tagore
• Read and analyze the short story, "The Cabulliwallah" by Rabinadrath Tagore
• Read the biography of Jhumpa Lahiri
• Read and analyze the short story, "A Temporary Matter" and discuss the complexity of human relationships
• Research the Russian Revolution and biography of Vladimir Nabokov
• Read an excerpt of Nabokov's memoir, "Speak Memory"
