My name is Dayln Kinard-Johnson. I’m an 18-year-old freshman attending Bloomfield College in New Jersey, pursuing graphic design as my major and running track on a scholarship. On my mother’s side, I’m from South Alabama and on my father’s side, I’m from Kingston Jamaica. I attended an all-boys Catholic High School named Mount St. Michael in the Bronx, New York. I started my athletic career when I was 11 playing football for the Harlem Jets. I didn’t get much playing time but I got to travel to Florida for the national championship and I loved the experience. It gave me the drive I need to continue playing sports so when I entered high school my cousin and coach encouraged me to try out for the track & field team. They were the only ones, besides my family, at the time that saw the potential in me, and to this day I look up to them as my mentors. Throughout my four years doing high school track, I barely had any friends in my grade level so I mostly hung out with the upperclassmen. They taught me how to do drills properly and execute in practice as if it was an actual track meet. My brothers instilled a new profound level of confidence and discipline in me that carry off and on the field.
Besides track & field, the greatest thing I’ve learned from them would be time management. Mainly balancing my grades, school work, practice, and social life. Although it’s still a struggle I always remember that I’m a scholar first before an athlete. That is the mentality that brought me to Bloomfield College. I chose to study graphic design here because of its high-level design and animation programs. I’ve always had a desire to express myself in an artistic and visual way. Part of every art piece I make shows part of me and how I see the world. So far, being at Bloomfield College I’ve bonded with a couple of my teammates and taken the resources the school has to offer to my full advantage. In the freshman year seminar I’m required to take I’ve learned the various departments of the campus and what they have to offer, study and time management tips, different active involvement activities to participate in, and just overall life skills that will help me in the future.
Some of the roadblocks that might prevent me from being successful here at Bloomfield would be getting distracted by females, parties, outings with friends, etc. Every now and then I’ll relieve myself of the pressure and anxiety from class and practice by going out with friends. But as long as I prioritize my work-life rather than my social life then my college journey shouldn’t be too difficult. Some of the materials discussed in my Freshman Year Seminar that motivate me to obtain a college degree are the CSS(Center for Student Success) Building, and the Trio SSS(Student Support Services) program they offer. They offer students like me that are first-generation, low-income, and/or disabled to navigate through their journey here. Some of the resources they provide include academic & personal coaching, tutorial services, career counseling, financial aid assistance such as loans, grants, and scholarships, computer lab, and cultural and social events. So far I’ve only used their computer lab and tutoring services and they’ve helped greatly improve my grades in class.
Five years from now after I graduate, if track & field does not go in my favor, I would like to pursue a career in becoming a graphic designer. I hope to make my name known throughout the design industry and have my work be included in large clothing brands, films, and businesses. I plan on doing internships Bloomfield’s Trio SSS offers with different clothing companies to gain some experience and limit the obstacles I’ll have when starting my own. Once I gain some exposure and popularity with my clothing brand I’d begin marketing my own skin/hair care products. Also, using all my knowledge with the adobe cloud and excel software my goal is to expand my business, media-wise, as much as possible and make myself stand out in the market.
I had a very inspirational experience during the first-generation panel. I learned that regardless of a person's status in society they can still struggle to find their way through college. From the personal stories, I heard I also came to the conclusion that you have to be creative and think outside the box if you want to be financially stable in college. Any idea could help scrape up enough money to keep you fed for that week. In Eden Georgy's story, one of the associate professors in the math & science division, he explained how he grew up extremely poor with a single mother taking care of him and his brother. His mother did some college but had to drop out to take care of her boys as her top priority. His brother didn't want to go to college so he had little support from him. His guidance counselor, the one person who's supposed to be guiding us to our future, didn't want him taking any classes, SATs, or any possible opportunity for success.
After graduating high school with a 1.9GPA he didn't know what else to do so he worked at target for a while. One day at work as he was stacking the shelves a kid came over and ran through isle knocking down all the products. Eden came to the realization that this was not how he wanted to spend the rest of his life. He stumbled upon Bloomfield College and with the help of Ms. Dilkes and other staff/faculty part of the college they helped him fill out his FAFSA, find his major, enroll in classes, and overall give him a fresh start with a full scholarship. Based on his story, along with others, I took in that you can come from anywhere and still have a chance at a bright future. You just can't waste opportunities and ignore the realizations that you have told you what your doing is wrong. I also learned that you must embrace three actions to achieve your academic goals successfully. Determination, perseverance, and motivation.
Based on the reading, I learned from James Baldwin's reading that behind every person's present selves and actions there are memories that ultimately define them. I also read about how you should trust your experiences and remember where you come from. There is the history behind everyone's home and it shapes who you are today and whom you will become in the future. It's better to act on what you know rather than sitting in the shadows being wasteful with the knowledge.
In America Ferrera's reading I learned that you should embrace who you are and what your family represents. To be grateful for the life you have rather than fantasize lives you can not obtain. Its okay to adapt to a new lifestyle as long as you do not forget what your old lifestyle taught you. People who had nothing often change when given everything. We don't take anything materialistic when we die. However, we do take our wisdom, knowledge, personality, memories, and ultimately everything that defines us.
Based on Keith Payne's chapter I learned that the perspective of inequality and injustice is looked upon differently in the eyes of children's compared to adults. Adults are labeled as sexist, racist, etc. But children are just overlooked with embarrassment. Children are ultimately a reflection of humanity. What they say and do helps us see what are doing as a society. Also, regardless of income, racial discrimination intersects between both the rich and poor.
A social justice I want to address is when movies include the LGBTQ community in movies and tv shows and fans get irritated or upset about it. In my opinion it doesn't change the plot or cinematic experience of the films but it in fact makes the films more rich and genuine. Its mean's to bring awareness to issue of people discriminating against the LGBTQ community not shame it. I want to know the thought process of fans when they see gay or bisexual people in their favorite films. By seeing their thought patterns we can better eliminate the issue entirely. I would conduct surveys throughout the Bloomfield College campus to view and analyze other's opinions .
My academic path at Bloomfield College is to utilize all the resources and knowledge available regarding my major in graphic design. I’ll take what I’ve learned and use it to build and develop my future clothing brand. I chose to study graphic design because growing up I always wanted to bring my creative imagination to life. At a young age I was deeply fascinated in marvel and dc comics so I began examining cartoons and drawing the characters I saw in different styles. It wasn't until my early years of high school where my mother bought me a tablet and I was introduced to digital art. Even though I had art as an elective they were not really teaching me the proper techniques of illustration and drawing so I chose a different approach. I downloaded various digital design software's and started drawing cartoon portraits of my friends & family and making logo designs for my track team. Coming into Bloomfield College I did not expect for them to have such a wide variety of technology at my disposal so I'm extremely excited to have something that can match my creativity. I plan on using the Microsoft tablets to make my designs and apply the photoshop software to edit it to my liking. I’ll bring it to life by using the heat press machine to put my designs on the clothes I want to market. I also realize that Bloomfield has more to offer than just fancy tech. The friends I’ve made have similar career goals and want to use what we have to help each other grow.
Based on my E-Portfolio in google sites I can say that my two strengths in the college & career journey page would be my personal work in graphic design, which is my major, and being able to network with people with similar interests. One challenge with creating my story for my e-portfolio is figuring out how to incorporate all my experiences and goals into one timestream and have them all relate to each other. One of my experiences I'm adding is the journey I've had in track & field from freshman year in high school until now. Another experience i would add is how my artistic perspective and artwork has grown and improved since my childhood. The challenge would be connecting those two experiences and at the end and relating it to my future goal of starting my own clothing brand and possibly going pro in track & field. As far as media I would include images of my artwork progression and pics/videos of me running to show how far I've come and am willing to go.
