Course Overview: In today’s changing society, one must learn to seek ways to gain knowledge and develop skills to enhance the ability to anticipate new needs over a lifetime of work and leisure, community involvement, and satisfying personal and family relationships. Home and Career Skills curriculum is comprehensive, and practice is needed in applying skills and concepts to daily living, and connections through service learning.

Course Description: This Home and Careers Skills course is based in the belief that the ability to reason, to think critically and creatively, and to reflect on one’s actions will empower students to act responsibly towards themselves, their families, their peers and the larger society. This course is taught using hands-on approach. The student is expected to be actively involved in learning in a participatory, supportive environment and to have the opportunity to practice and develop skills related to course content.

The student will gain knowledge and skills in the processes of decision-making, problem solving, consumer skills and personal development. The student will participate in social skills development, preparing healthy snacks, and sewing buttons, including a hand-sewing project.

Focus on developing effective communication skills to express thoughts, feelings, opinions, and information to enhance family, school, and community and ultimately work relationships. Students will develop positive interpersonal qualities leading to teamwork and cooperation in large and small groups in family, social and work based situations.

Requirements:

· Warm Fuzzy Project: which includes skills in listening, decision making, writing, following directions, and hand-sewing

· Reading Nutrition Labels and introduction to Nutrition, including quiz.

· Preparation and knowledge of healthy snacks.

· Learning to sew three kinds of buttons, and sew a turtle beanbag.

Writing Requirements: Story about your Warm Fuzzy, showing understanding of being “warm and fuzzy”.

Grading Policy: Laboratory- type assessments are a regular means of evaluation. Effort counts!

Course Outline:

UNIT 1: Personal Development/Decision Making

Students will use thinking skills for problem solving and focused observation, and allow the application of knowledge to new and unfamiliar situations.

· Understanding of self-concept and empathy

· Building self confidence

· Apply problem solving to personal problems

· Compassion; “Warm Fuzzy” project

· Decision making related to dilemmas to personal health

UNIT 2: Reading Nutrition Labels

· Pretest of knowledge of reading nutrition labels

· Introduction of six essential nutrients and understanding nutrition labels

· Calculating calories

· Understanding importance of serving size

· Explore healthy snacks with “sugar project”

UNIT 3: Kitchen Safety/ Healthy Snack Preparation

· Job Charts/ working in groups to achieve end product

· Liquid and dry measure

· Food handling and safety procedures

· Beginning knife skills, peeling, blender, electric hand-mixer

· Healthy snacks/ basic food preparation

UNIT 4: Hand Sewing

Students will use available resources to design and create personal and societal needs and wants.

· Learning to sew buttons including a beanbag project using patterns.

· Learn to knot, thread, the blanket stitch, the running stitch, knots, ending.

UNIT 5: Final Project

· Putting it all together

· Using skills learned create a pouch for your cell phone

· Incorporating Math skills
