Plans don't include university?

"The government recommends that by the age of 18, students should have at least two experiences of the workplace, additional to any part-time job they may have had"

Prospects

If you are considering an apprenticeship after college or going straight into work, it is essential that whilst you are with us at Blackpool Sixth you complete at least one day of work experience, ideally in the sector you wish to go into. We contact students throughout the academic year to see they are up to with work experience and to provide help and guidance. We encourage students to build up a portfolio of experience to best equip them for the world of work and to increase employability prospects. Our aim is to ensure you complete work experience that can help you to develop the skills, confidence and experience you need and to ensure you are work ready.

Spotted an apprenticeship scheme or a job that you're interested in after college? Why not ask the company if you can complete some work experience with them? Once you have your foot in the door, the employer will get to know you, your work ethic and your passion for working in that sector, so next time it comes to recruiting they will already have experience working with you. You never know what doors can open with work experience, so it always important to make the most from your placement. We have had students who have gone on to secure apprenticeships and paid work through their placements, so make sure to make a good impression. Equally, you may find that the placement isn't for you and this will help you to narrow your choices in the type of work you are looking for.

Your Apprenticeship Application

When applying for an apprenticeship, include all your experience on your CV in chronological order- don't forget about the transferable skills you have gained from your work experience. For example if you are applying for an engineering apprenticeship and you have completed work experience in a shop, think about the transferable skills you have gained from that experience to support your application, for example customer service, working as a team and time management.

Transferable skills you can gain from work experience:

  • Communication

  • Team work

  • Organization

  • Leadership

  • Adaptability

"You can start developing essential skills and experience while increasing your employability. Having work experience and building your CV will make you more attractive to employers, and will open up more job opportunities in the future."
