Tailor
Tailors make or alter custom clothes for individual customers. On a day to day basis they may speak with customers about what they want, create designs by hand or using computer software, make new patterns or adapt existing ones, cut and assemble fabric pieces to make up garments, check quality at every stage of the process, fit garments to customers and make final adjustments before pressing and finishing, carry out repairs and alterations for customers and much more.
How to become a tailor
The main routes to get into this role are:
A university course- you could do a relevant degree to gain access into this career.
An apprenticeship-you may be able to find an apprenticeship which can help you gain access to gaining this career.
A college course- there are various different diplomas you could undertake to support you. For example in fashion design, textile etc.
Working towards the role- you could start by working as an assistant to a master tailor in a tailoring house. You may be able to arrange this yourself, if you can show you have a keen interest in making clothes and have sewing skills.

Apprenticeship options
You could do an apprenticeship to get started in this career, for example:
Garment Maker Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship
Fashion and Textiles Pattern Cutter Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship
Bespoke Tailor and Cutter Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship
These can take around 2 years to complete.
You may be able to get into the industry through the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRBA) apprenticeship programme. This can take between 2 and 6 years to complete.
You would apply directly to SRBA member tailoring companies. Competition for places is strong.
