The Houses of Parliament are determined to be a rewarding, inclusive and diverse place to work. Parliament has set up three schemes to offer opportunities to individuals who would not previously have thought to work here. These schemes offer the chance to work both for the House Service and for a Member of Parliament and provide opportunities to increase their employability for the future.
The united aim of the schemes is to try to reach out to the widest possible pool of talent and attract people who may not have considered a career in Parliament.

How to gain work experience in politics?

Politics is an exciting and wide-ranging career path that provides thousands of different job opportunities. From working in the Houses of Parliament to local campaigning, there are plenty of ways for you to work in the political field. If you have a strong interest in current affairs and opinions about how to run the country or local authorities successfully, a career in politics might suit you.
Many politicians may have done something different before embarking on a career in politics, so there are plenty of options moving forward to gain work experience if you cannot find a job in politics straight away.
Rishi Sunak - I grew up watching my parents serve our local community with dedication. My dad was an NHS family GP and my mum ran her own local chemist shop. I wanted to make that same positive difference to people as their Member of Parliament and I was first elected to represent this wonderful constituency in 2015 and re-elected in 2017 and 2019. I live in Kirby Sigston, just outside Northallerton.
I have been fortunate to enjoy a successful business career. I co-founded a large investment firm, working with companies from Silicon Valley to Bangalore. Then I used that experience to help small and entrepreneurial British companies grow successfully. From working in my mum’s tiny chemist shop to my experience building large businesses, I have seen first-hand how politicians should support free enterprise and innovation to ensure our future prosperity.
I have been a school governor, a board member of a large youth club, and have always volunteered my time to education programmes that spread opportunity.

Kier Starmer - I’m a husband, father, and former Chief Prosecutor. My entire career has been about securing justice and change for those that need it.
From representing people on death row as a human rights lawyer, to working on setting up the Northern Ireland Police Board in the wake of the Good Friday agreement, to making the law work for victims as Chief Prosecutor. I am determined to make sure organisations work for the people they are supposed to serve.
It was an honour to be elected leader of the Labour Party in 2020, to continue this work.
