Network Manager
Network managers help design, install and run an organisation’s IT, data and telephone systems. On a day to day basis they may assess a client’s computing requirements, design and test network plans to meet your client’s needs, put in place network security measures, plan backup and recovery systems, monitor and report on network performance and usage and much more.
HOW TO BECOME A NETWORK MANAGER
The main routes to get into this role are :
A university course- there are many different degrees you could undertake in many different areas.
An apprenticeship- there are many relevant degree apprenticeships that can support you in becoming a network manager.
Working towards this role- you could work your way up in this role by gaining an entry level job.
Training with a private provider- you may be able to get an industry recognised certificate like Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or CompTIA Network+ through a private training provider.
UNIVERSITY OPTIONS
You will usually need 2-3 a levels to undertake a relevant degree. You could do a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree before applying for a job as a trainee network manager. Relevant subjects include:
Computer networking and security
Networks and communications systems
Computer science
Digital communications and networks
APPRENTICESHIP OPTIONS
You could complete a network engineer higher apprenticeship or a digital technology solutions degree apprenticeship. This is dependent on the company and area, you will also usually need to go through an interview process when applying for a degree apprenticeship in network management.
