WORK PLACEMENT, ONLINE AND EMPLOYABILITY VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES

Note to students:

It is really important that your timetable isn't regularly affected by any work experience.

If you would like to attend any sessions that do conflict with lessons and are a maximum of one day, a permission slip can be obtained through sian.roberts@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk which needs to be agreed upon firstly by your teachers and then head of department to be released from lesson.

Any longer term or block placements (placements that would require more than a day) should be arranged in holidays and/or weekends so as to reduce the disruption this causes to learning.

This workshop is the perfect way to help your students understand what archives are and how there are a variety of rewarding careers linked to them.

Archives hold unique and irreplaceable records from our history, documenting decisions made, feelings experienced, and achievements reached. Just like how people keep important photos and documents at home, lots of organisations have an archive – businesses, local authorities, charities, historic houses and religious organisations all use archives to keep a record of their history. Even the government has one – The National Archives. Archives can connect us to our pasts, our local area and our community. Archives hold photos, diaries, maps, contracts, architectural plans, illustrations and more. The most amazing thing about archives is that you don’t have to see everything behind a sheet of glass in an archive – you can hold the records in your own hands!

In this workshop, your students will hear from and can ask questions to a range of people who work at The National Archives. Our cataloguers help organise our records and make them findable to the public. Our records specialists research the collections, help shape exhibitions and share stories from the archives. Our conservators use science to understand what our records are made of, develop ways to keep them safe, and repair them when they get damaged. And our web archivists capture records of what is on the internet, so that even digital information isn’t lost and generations in the future will know what life is like today
