what is A HAIRDRESSER?
Hairdressers cut, style and colour clients' hair to create the look they want. On a day to day basis they may welcome customers, shampoo and condition hair, cut simple styles, make sure towels and hair products are well stocked, keep the salon clean and tidy, make appointments, talk to clients and suggest style ideas, cut and style hair, give advice on minor hair and scalp problems, take payments and much more.
You could be:
talking to clients about how they want their hair and advising on styles
cutting and styling hair using a variety of equipment; scissors, clippers, straighteners, rollers, hot brushes and dryers
washing and conditioning hair, perhaps offering special treatments such as head massage or deep conditioning treatments
tinting, colouring, permanently waving or straightening hair using tints, bleaches and lotions
applying styling products such as gel, mousse, wax or spray
trimming beards and moustaches
advising on simple hair problems and suggesting possible treatments or recommending hair products
answering the phone, making appointments, ordering supplies and paying invoices
keeping the salon clean and tidy, making sure supplies are readily available and chemicals stored away safely.
HOW TO BECOME A HAIRDRESSER
The main routes to get into this role are:
A college course- there are diplomas which can support you in gaining this role.
An apprenticeship- you could do an apprenticeship to get into this role.
Working towards this role- you could get an entry level job and work your way up.

Level 2 hair professional
Level 3 advanced and creative hair professional
This is dependent on the company and you will usually need to complete and pass an interview.
