Girls in Electonics

Girls into Electronics is a series of non-residential events that are being hosted by leading universities across the UK this summer, including University of Leeds. The events are ideal for girls in Year 11, 12 or 13, thinking about studying Electronics, Computer Science or Engineering. Participants will get the chance to hear from female staff and students at the university, and from female graduates working in the Electronics industry, have a tour of our facilities, and also get an introduction to microcontrollers. They can keep the microcontroller kit and get on-line support to complete a range of practical experiments.

If you are an individual student interested in attending, please use the link here to find the relevant event, and click through to reserve your place. The events are being organised by the United Kingdom Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF), and are sponsored by Apple with the exception of a small booking fee of £20 per student. UKESF aim for their courses to be accessible to all, so if the booking fee is a barrier, or if you need support for travel costs, please get in touch before booking, via info@ukesf.org.

If you are a teacher interested in organising a trip to this event, please use this form to book places. If you aren’t in a position to book yet, you can register your interest here and when you’re ready to secure places, the booking form can be completed. 6th May 2021

The Wisdom Tooth presents The Day of the Dentist – a fantastic one day workshop aimed

at secondary school students and sixth-formers thinking about pursuing a career in

dentistry.

We know that deciding upon your future career is often a daunting, confusing and

stressful time. Here at The Wisdom Tooth we aim to help you make the most important

decision of your academic career so far by providing you an insight into what to expect

from undergraduate dentistry and dentistry as a career.

We also appreciate that work-experience opportunities are few and far between and

gaining any meaningful form of hands-on experience can be difficult. As such this day

aims to provide invaluable practical experience in some of the key disciplines of

undergraduate dentistry. We will also cover the basics of dental anatomy, history-taking

and clinical examination.

This is aimed to give you a better understanding of the dental undergraduate experience

and in doing so give you an edge when applying for dental undergraduate programmes.

Time will also be given to demystify the dental undergraduate application process and

provide you with the opportunity to ask questions to those who have first-hand experience

of undergraduate and postgraduate dentistry. All tutors on the workshop are UK

registered dentists with full CRB validation.

Virtual Masterclasses

'Expert Witness' - Police Officer witness statements

Date: 17th December 11am – 12pm

This masterclass will introduce students to the processes and procedures by which Police Officers gather and provide primary evidence in written statement form.

Whilst this begins with what they see and hear when dealing with an incident, it is the ability to identify criminal activity and offence 'points to prove', recall and record the actions and speech of themselves and others, and bring a heightened level of attention to detail to their reports, which will enable them to produce high quality written 'expert witness' statements.

Accurate and detailed Police Officer witness statements are a crucial factor in securing convictions in a court of law; this session is designed to introduce and inform attendees of the complexity of this process.

The amazing thing about our Masterclasses is the opportunity they give your students opportunity to explore and discuss topics they’re interested in with professionals, academics and other like-minded students too! As an added bonus, attendance at our Masterclasses is rewarded with reduced offers on future applications to related subjects at the University of Cumbria (T&Cs available on our website here)

To book onto this session, students can head over to www.cumbria.ac.uk/masterclasses

Remember to keep an eye out in the New Year for our next series of dates. If you’ve any colleagues who’d classes might benefit from these sessions then as stated please do feel free to forward this email along to them!
