Here you will find some general tips for creating a learning environment at home.
Continue to wake up at a similar or the same time in the morning and adhere to a typical morning routine of getting dressed, eating a healthy breakfast, brushing teeth....just like you would do on a typical school day.
Collaborate with your child to create a schedule of what their learning day should look like. The school or the teacher should already have a schedule ready. Break longer learning activities up with movement activities, calming activities, snack/lunch time, etc. Visual schedules are helpful ways to show what the day will look like and what is expected for each time period. For younger students, consider a "first, then" schedule.
Setup an area where your child will be completing school learning activities such as a table or a desk. This area should be as distraction free as possible. Ideally, everything should be set up for optimal success. If using a space that is used for other activities, consider using a bin or box to place supplies when learning time is over.
If needed and/or based on student age, parents can create a reinforcement schedule in which your child can earn a preferred activity for following the schedule and completing work. (30 minutes of working=5 minutes of a preferred activity such as a video game, coloring, music, TV)
