Admissions to Nursery

The school offers 15 hours each week free nursery entitlement to all pupils, from the term after they turn 3 years old.  Families have the option to purchase additional hours depending on need.

Currently, parents can 'purchase' additional hours, which are charged at £6.90 per hour for the additional hours per week if they wish to. This charge reflects the £6.90 per hour ‘Base Rate’ for nursery that schools will receive from the Department of Education.

From 1 September 2017, the Government will be extending the free childcare entitlement for some working parents of 3 and 4 year-olds, to 30 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year. This is being introduced alongside a new scheme to help working families with the cost of childcare called Tax-Free Childcare. Information about eligibility criteria can be obtained from the DFE Childcare Bill: policy statement

Parents must apply through an online eligibility checking system. Parents who provide false information about their eligibility can be fined between £300 and £3000. The website is www.gov.uk/childcare-calculator.

It is optional for child care providers to offer 30 free hours and register of all OFSTED approved providers in Royal Greenwich can be found at   http://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/fis

Curriculum in EYFS

At BJR, we place great value on the development of children as individuals, recognising that all children are unique and special to God. We provide them with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to prepare them for the challenges in Key Stage One and beyond. Our aim in the Early Years and Foundation Stage is to build strong foundations rooted in academic success, as well as moral and spiritual development, so that ultimately our pupils can be successful and go on to be active citizens of society and happy, curious life-long learners.

Our curriculum is therefore the cultural capital we know our pupils need so that they can gain the knowledge, skills and understanding they require for success. They can only do that if we embed the right habits for learning through the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning: Play, Exploration, Active Learning, Creativity and Critical Thinking.

At the heart of the Early Years Foundation Stage is the teaching of early reading, which includes a systematic approach to the teaching and learning of phonics. This is embedded in our curriculum to foster a life-long love of reading. Our enabling environment and warm, skilful adult interactions support the children as they link learning to their play and exploration. This is delivered through a holistic curriculum which maximises opportunities for meaningful cross-curricular links and learning experiences, as well as promoting the unique child by offering extended periods of play and sustained thinking following children’s interests and ideas. We value imagination and creativity and seek to create a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning through a vibrant continuous indoor and outdoor provision, alongside trips, visits and regular forest school sessions.

Church of England Education

As a church school, we are proud of our inclusive and inspirational ethos. All pupils are invited to join elements of prayer, worship and sharing Bible stories through our acts of daily collective worship, as well as use our reflective spaces throughout the school, however there is no compulsion to do so.

As part of the application process (for nursery and main school places) we ask parents and carers to complete a supplementary form, to identify whether they are applying for a foundation place or community place. An explanation of the difference between these is given in the school's admission policy (see here)
