Great Expectations classroom practices

The following is a brief overview of some of the practices found in a GE classroom.

Life Principles

Life principles are character traits that we would like student to begin "living." Developing character in students can be done through the use of classic literature, poetry, quotations, words of the week, or as themes. We will cover the 17 Life Principles as words of the week throughout the year.

Call to Excellence

Call to Excellence is done in our classroom daily. It is an opportunity for students and the teacher to celebrate excellence and begin each day on a positive note. Our Call to Excellence includes : The Pledge of Allegiance, Pledge to the Oklahoma flag, our class creed, the school creed, Magic Triad song, Kindness poem, word of the week, quote of the week, celebration of the week, recite the 8 Expectations, birthday celebrations, and joke of the week.

Magic Triad

The Magic Triad is a smile, a kind touch, and a kind word. These have a powerful effect on children and adults alike. The smile, touch, and kind words bring people closer together, create a caring atmosphere, and reduce discipline problems tremendously.

Purpose of the Magic Triad-

Build trust, promote a sense of belonging, encourages students, shows that teachers care and are interested, meets the basic self-esteem needs, provides a sense of safety, reduces discipline problems, strengthens relationships, creates a willingness to cooperate and participate, keeps the teacher in contact with every student.

Celebrations

Good feelings come from the positive impact of others. One way to have this positive impact is to cheer students to success. Celebrating little successes are important ways to create a "specialness" within a child. It builds self-esteem, helps students learn to appreciate others, shows appreciation for accomplishments made, and encourages children to take risks.
