Class Information

In my Social Studies class, we cover the early settlements of North America through the westward movement after the Louisiana purchase. My focus with my students is teaching them study skills. We utilize not only technological methods, but also traditional methods of learning the vocabulary for each chapter. Students are taught to analyze text and identify main ideas and supporting details to complete an outline of each lesson. We do study guides and play review games to prepare for each chapter test.

Fifth graders are expected to learn the following:

How to respond to a writing prompt after reading a passage or two

How to plan, write, and revise a 5-paragraph composition

How to write compositions which are narrative, informative, or persuasive

We start with detailed sentences, then do 3-point paragraphs. I always start with teaching students how to do a web/cluster for planning out their ideas. Then we focus on putting those ideas into a complete-sentence outline. Last, we transform the outline into a 5-paragraph essay. This year year 5th grade takes the writing test online, so we are also learning how to type our compositions with correct formatting, indentations, capitalization, punctuation, etc.
