Expectations

Dear 6th grade language arts families,

WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE! I am so glad you are going to be with us. I feel that effective communication between teachers, parents, and students is essential for a successful school year. My email address is NEstes@bixbyps.org. This is the best way to reach me. My school number is 918-366-2671 #1829. If you leave a phone message, please give me 24 hours to return your call. Our teacher websites should be up and running very soon.

Curriculum- Sixth grade language arts consist of reading, writing, and grammar. Your student will receive one grade for this class. We read in depth at least two novels in 6th grade. Figurative language, writing style, vocabulary, and other literary elements are learned.

Supplies-Students will need to bring their language arts folder, pencil, red pen, notebook paper, and library book to class each day. Students will periodically need to bring their binder, scissors, markers or colored pencils, and white glue for an interactive notebook we will be making this year. All students will also be required to bring a planner which can be purchased in the office.

Grading- I base all scores on percentages. Tests and projects will be weighted more than written daily work. Extra Credit assignments may be assigned throughout the year. I encourage students to take advantage of every opportunity. Grades can be viewed on Powerschool using your student’s access code that was given at Meet the Teacher on your child’s schedule. If you have misplaced your code, please contact our counselor for a copy. I do not have these codes.

Late work- will be received with points deducted depending on how late it is turned in. It is never too late to turn in an assignment. A student who turns in late work up to two days late will receive 75% of the earned grade. Over two days late will be given 60% of the earned grade and so forth. Some credit is better than no credit! If you see that your student has a zero on Powerschool, they have not turned in that particular assignment.

Make-up work- We realize that sometimes your child must leave school early for a doctor’s appointment, etc., but please try to have your child in school every possible day until the school day has ended. Emphasizing education at home should include emphasizing the importance of attendance. It is a student’s responsibility to get absent work on the day they return. See the make- up file box in the classroom. The student handbook states that one day for each day absent is given to complete make-up assignments. Make-up work not turned in on time will be considered late. If a parent calls the office to request work be sent home, it is expected of the student to make every effort to complete this work while they are out.

Outside Food or Drink – No food will be allowed in class. I will allow water if it is in a transparent water container. On occasion, I will make exceptions to these rules. Students will be notified in advance (i.e. class behavior rewards etc.) If you choose to celebrate a birthday, please plan on doing this in the cafeteria during lunch. We will not have food items in the classroom.

Thank you for trusting me with your children. I look forward to working with them as they mature and get ready for the middle school. They are our future, and I promise to do my best to help build theirs.
