At BISR we seek to promote a positive, lifelong approach to sport that focuses on giving our students a wide choice of experiences and the development of excellence for those who choose to take their interests to a higher level. We aim to achieve these standards by using the school's motto of, ‘REACH’ as the fundamentals and foundations of achieving success. We have created a programme which moves away from the Sport driven curriculum models that are now outdated and have worked on ways to retain the value and essence of Sport, in a model driven by the development of transferable concepts and key skills across multiple learning - Cognitive, Health, Interpersonal, and Physical domains.
“CHIP”
The BISR Physical Education programme will strive to deliver innovative and inspiring teaching, with a clear, mapped progression, which promotes positive student progress across all Primary & Senior Key Stages. The consistent approach we will deliver of striving towards the “CHIP fundamentals” will help our students have a clear and precise path as they progress through the school and in still skills and behaviours to promote sport & physical activity for the wider student body.
We are firm in our belief that sport for all should be a part of school life and is crucial in the development of personal qualities. We will look to inspire and motivate each individual so they find an area that they are passionate about and will do this with a clear goal of “Inspiring the athlete In All”
Our Secondary Physical Education Curriculum refines and builds upon the Cognitive, Health, Interpersonal and Physical fundamentals instilled throughout the Primary years.
As students progress through Key Stage 3, they are both challenged and supported to apply key concepts and transferable skills to increasingly demanding, complex and dynamic situations. Whilst Sport is at the heart of students' experiences, it is not the end point. Instead, it is the vehicle we use to promote confident, competent, physically active lifelong learners and global citizens, beyond the Sports Hall, into classrooms and crucially, the rapidly changing and diverse communities in which we live today. We endeavour to achieve this challenging goal through the development and enrichment of CHIP fundamentals, some of which can be found below;
Cognitive Skills - Knowledge & Understanding, Decision Making, Problem Solving and Creativity.
Health & Fitness - Core Strength & Stability, Speed, Stamina and Flexibility.
(Inter) Personal Skills - Communication, Cooperation, Determination & Resilience, Confidence & Self Esteem, Respect and Leadership.
Performing Skills - Technical, Tactical, Coordination & Fluency, Balance & Control, Rhythm & Timing
The curriculum aims to ensure that the following areas are addressed:
Vertical Alignment & Progression - How can we create a model to ensure staff (current and prospective) consistency with a clear, mapped progression, which promotes positive student progress across all Primary & Senior Key Stages.
Curriculum Focus - Sport driven curriculum models are outdated. How can we retain the value and essence of Sport, in a model driven by the development of transferable concepts and key skills across multiple learning - Cognitive, Health & Fitness, Interpersonal and Physical domains. To do this we have Split the groups into 3 sections, Performance - Progression - Development , these groups will help each student play, perform and learn at a standard they feel comfortable at.
Lifelong Participation - All BISR students access our subject, aside from the ‘natural athletes’, can we be doing more to engage and increase the activity habits we endeavour to promote out of, or beyond school. How do we better cater for the students who don't participate in our teams, or have a career in sport, by instilling skills, attitudes and behaviours to promote lifelong physical activity habits.
